Title: FRP Composites in Construction: Past Achievements and Future Opportunities/土木工程复材结构领域的回顾及展望
Abstract: Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, formed by embedding continuous fibres (e.g., carbon, glass, aramid and basalt fires) in a polymeric resin matrix, possess many advantages over traditional materials, including excellent corrosion resistance, high strength-to-weight ratios and tailorability of material properties. While they also have some weaknesses (e.g., relatively poor fire resistance), they offer a cost-effective structural solution in many applications. As a result, FRP composites have gained increasingly wide acceptance as a new class of construction materials over the past two decades, initially in the strengthening of existing structures and more recently in the construction of new structures.
This presentation will start with an overview of the structural use of FRP composites in construction, covering both research and practical applications. This overview will indicate that FRP strengthening is now a mainstream technology widely used around the world, while the new construction area offers many opportunities for innovation with FRP composites. The presentation will then focus on the optimal use of FRP composites in new structures, which often means that FRP composites need to be used in combination with other materials (e.g., steel, concrete and timber) to form new types of hybrid structures. Several new forms of hybrid structures enabled by FRP composites will be presented to illustrate the opportunities they offer and the research needed for them to be widely implemented in practice.
